A trouble code tells you which circuit reported a fault. It does not tell you which part failed. A group of codes read together is often what points at the actual cause, which is why we pull everything the car has stored rather than the one code that turned the light on. We test the difference before anything gets replaced.

At a parts counter or a quick-lube place, auto diagnostics in Duluth usually starts the same way: a light comes on, somebody plugs in a $30 code reader, and you get handed a printout that says P0171. That code means the engine is running lean. It does not mean you need an oxygen sensor, and the number of oxygen sensors sold on the strength of that code is genuinely remarkable. That is not how it works here.
What we do instead is read the car with software built for that car. On a BMW, an Audi, a Volvo or a Land Rover, the factory-level tool sees modules, adaptations, freeze-frame data and live values that a generic reader never gets access to. That is the difference between knowing a circuit reported a fault and knowing what caused it.
From there it is testing, not guessing. Smoke testing for vacuum leaks, a pressure test on the cooling system, live fuel trim data on a road test, a scope on a sensor signal. When we call you, we tell you what failed, how we proved it, and what it costs to fix it.
A warning light means something is out of range. It is usually safe to drive, but the longer a fault runs the more likely it is to take something else with it. Get it read within a week or so.
A flashing light is almost always an active misfire, and raw fuel going into a hot catalytic converter can destroy it in a few miles. That turns a coil pack into a converter bill. Most newer cars cut the injector on the misfiring cylinder to protect the converter, so you do not have to pull over on the spot, but minimize driving. Keep the trip as short as you can and call us the same day.
Foreign cars throw messages that read like a legal disclaimer. Drivetrain malfunction, restricted performance, service required soon. Photograph the message before you clear it. It helps.
Common, and not a reason to ignore it. Emissions and evaporative faults often have no symptom at all until the day you need a plate renewal or a buyer runs a scan.
Rough starts on cold mornings, a hesitation that only happens on the hill, a battery drain that only shows up after four days parked. Those are the ones a shop with the right tooling actually solves.
We see this weekly. Bring the invoices. Knowing what has already been ruled out is genuinely useful and it keeps you from paying for the same part twice.
We charge for diagnostic time, and we will tell you what that time is before we start. Anybody advertising free diagnostics is either reading a code off a scanner in the parking lot or building the cost into a repair you have not agreed to yet.
What you are paying for is the part where we do not replace things. A confirmed diagnosis is almost always cheaper than a sequence of educated guesses, and it is the only version where the light stays off after you pay.
Cars come in for auto diagnostics in Duluth, MN from all over the East Hillside, and from Lakeside, Congdon, Woodland and Piedmont on the other side of the hill. The shop sits at 722 East Ninth Street, a few minutes up from downtown, so it is a short trip from most of the city.
A good share of the work arrives from further out. Superior is about 10 minutes over the Blatnik or the Bong. Hermantown and Proctor are about fifteen. Cloquet is roughly 25 minutes up I-35 and Two Harbors about thirty down Highway 61. For most of those drivers the nearest dealer with the right software is in the Twin Cities, which makes auto diagnostics in Duluth the far shorter drive.

Same car, three very different afternoons. Here is the honest version, including the row where we are not the right answer.

We left the row we lose on right in the chart. If your car is still under factory warranty for the repair you need, we will tell you to go to the dealership. We would rather say it here than after you have driven over.
We can read the code for you, but we will not pretend it is a diagnosis. Real auto diagnostics starts after the code. A code names a symptom and a circuit. On a modern foreign car there are usually several things that can set the same code, and the honest answer is that testing is what tells you which one it is.
A steady light usually means yes, get it looked at soon. A flashing light means stop driving and call us at (218) 722-2246, because that is typically a misfire and it can destroy a catalytic converter within a few miles. If the temperature gauge is climbing or you see steam, pull over regardless of what the light is doing.
Yes, and it is a large share of what we do. Bring the invoices so we can see what has already been ruled out. We start over with proper testing rather than continuing somebody else's guess.
Call and ask about your specific job. We will tell you exactly how the diagnostic time is handled before you leave the car, and there will be no surprises on the invoice.
Yes, call first. We book by phone Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and we do not take appointments online. Diagnostic work needs bay time reserved for it.
