Leaks, gaskets, timing components, misfires and the oil consumption that foreign engines are famous for. Repaired properly, and told to you straight.

Most engine repair in Duluth is not dramatic. It is a valve cover gasket weeping onto an exhaust manifold and filling the cabin with a hot oil smell. It is a timing chain guide that has gone brittle. It is a misfire on cylinder four that three coil packs have not fixed. This is the everyday work, and it is most of what comes through the door.
On foreign engines the failure patterns are specific and they repeat. BMW cooling and VANOS components. Audi and Volkswagen timing chain tensioners and carbon build-up on direct injection. Volvo PCV systems that pressurize the crankcase and push oil past every seal you own. Subaru head gaskets. When you see the same failures every week you stop diagnosing them from scratch, and that shows up on your invoice.
We are straight about the boundary. We repair engines. We do not do full engine rebuilds here. If we open a car up and find damage that has moved past repair, we will tell you that plainly, tell you what the realistic options are, and not spend your money proving it slowly.
Almost always a leak dripping onto something hot. On a foreign engine the usual suspect is a valve cover or timing cover gasket. It is a cheap repair now and a very different repair once oil gets into the wiring loom.
Some consumption is normal on certain engines. A quart every thousand miles is not. Worth finding out which one you have before you top it up for another year.
Misfires get worse in cold and wet weather, which in Duluth means most of the year. If the check engine light is flashing while it happens, stop driving and call us.
On a lot of foreign four-cylinders this is a timing chain tensioner, and the noise is the only warning you get. Do not wait it out.
Blue is oil, white that does not clear is usually coolant. Either one means it needs looking at before you drive it much further.
Frequently a head gasket, and on some engines it goes internal before it ever shows on the ground. Common enough on Subarus that we check for it as a matter of course.
Engine work varies more than any other job in the shop. A valve cover gasket and a timing chain job on the same car are not the same afternoon, and a range quoted before anybody has looked would only mislead you.
What we do is give you the price before we start. Once we have found what is actually wrong you get an exact figure for your year, make and model, and if something turns up once the covers are off you get a phone call before any more time goes on the ticket.
Most engine repair in Duluth, MN comes from people who live within a few miles of the shop. East Hillside, Lakeside, Congdon, Woodland, Piedmont and the West End are all a short run to 722 East Ninth Street, and plenty of those cars have been coming here for a decade or more.
The rest drive in from Superior, Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet and Two Harbors. Northern winters are part of why. Cold starts are hard on seals and gaskets, short trips never get the oil properly hot, and both of those show up as the leaks and the oil use that bring a car in for engine repair in the first place.

Same car, three very different afternoons. Here is the honest version, including the row where we are not the right answer.

We left the row we lose on right in the chart. If your car is still under factory warranty for the repair you need, we will tell you to go to the dealership. We would rather say it here than after you have driven over.
No. We repair engines, which covers gaskets, seals, timing components, misfires, oil consumption and the cooling work attached to all of it. Full internal rebuilds are not something we take on. If yours needs one, we will tell you honestly rather than starting a job we are not set up to finish.
Some engines genuinely do consume oil and the manufacturer considers it acceptable. On others it is a failed PCV system pulling oil straight into the intake. The two feel identical from the driver's seat, which is exactly why it is worth testing rather than assuming.
On a lot of foreign four-cylinder engines, yes. That short cold-start rattle is a classic timing chain tensioner symptom and it does not get better on its own. Bring it in while it is still a rattle.
Scheduled maintenance, yes, without affecting your warranty, as long as it is done to specification and documented. An actual warranty repair has to go through a dealership, and we will tell you when that is the better call for you.
Yes. Toyota, Nissan and Subaru are all on our makes list and all regular work here.
It depends entirely on the job and on parts availability, which for some foreign models means a day or two of shipping. We give you a realistic timeframe when you approve the work, and we call you if it changes.
