A thorough inspection and a road test before you hand over the money, and an honest list of what you would actually be buying.

A pre-purchase car inspection in Duluth costs a fraction of one repair, and it is the only point in the process where you still have all your leverage. Once the money changes hands, everything the car needs is yours. Before that, it is a negotiation, and a written list of findings is the strongest thing you can bring to one.
This matters more on foreign cars than almost anything else, because the gap between a well-maintained example and a neglected one is enormous and it is largely invisible from the driver's seat. Two identical cars on the same lot can be five thousand dollars apart in deferred maintenance and look exactly the same in the photos.
It also matters in the Northland specifically. Rust. A car that lived its life in Minnesota or Wisconsin has spent years in road salt, and underbody corrosion decides whether a car is worth buying long before the engine does. That is a lift inspection, not a walk-around, and it is the single most common reason we tell somebody to walk away.
There is no warranty, no recourse and no comeback. A private-sale car should never be bought unseen by a shop.
The maintenance history is most of the value on these cars. If nobody can produce it, an inspection is how you find out what was skipped.
Underbody corrosion is the deciding factor on a lot of otherwise good northern cars, and you cannot see it from a parking lot.
If you are driving to the Twin Cities or across the bridge to look at something, get it inspected before you commit rather than after.
Sometimes it is a genuine deal. Sometimes there is a reason. An inspection tells you which, for a fraction of the difference.
Certified means somebody checked it against their own list. It does not mean an independent shop with no stake in the sale checked it against yours.
A thorough inspection, including a road test, for around $100. Producing an accurate estimate takes shop time, and this is that time. Compared to what one missed timing chain job or one rusted subframe costs, it is not a close comparison.
One thing worth knowing: the seller has to agree to bring the car here, or let you bring it. A seller who refuses an independent inspection has told you something useful, and it is worth listening to.
A pre-purchase car inspection in Duluth matters more here than in most places, and the reason is underneath the car. Any vehicle that has spent its winters in the Twin Ports has spent them in road salt, and underbody corrosion decides whether a car is worth buying long before the engine does.
Buyers bring cars to 722 East Ninth Street from all over the East Hillside, Lakeside, Congdon, Woodland and Piedmont, and from Superior, Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet and Two Harbors. If you are looking at something in the Twin Cities, arrange the pre-purchase car inspection before you commit rather than after you have driven it home.

Same car, three very different afternoons. Here is the honest version, including the row where we are not the right answer.

We left the row we lose on right in the chart. If your car is still under factory warranty for the repair you need, we will tell you to go to the dealership. We would rather say it here than after you have driven over.
It goes on the lift for a full module scan, a fluid and leak assessment, a brake and suspension check and a road test. The road test is part of the inspection, not an extra. Then we go through what we found with you. Call and we will tell you what the wait looks like that week.
We tell you what the car is and what it needs. Plenty of cars come back with a list and are still worth buying at the right price, and knowing the list is what gets you to the right price. When something is genuinely not worth it, we will say so plainly.
That is an answer in itself. A seller with a good car has nothing to lose from an hour at an independent shop. We would take a refusal seriously.
We can inspect anything that gets driven or trailered to 722 E Ninth St. If you are looking at something in Superior, Cloquet, Two Harbors or down the shore, arrange with the seller to bring it here.
Thoroughly, and it is often the finding that matters most on a northern car. Frame rails, subframes, rocker panels, brake and fuel lines and suspension mounting points all get looked at on the lift.
Any of the makes on our list, from BMW and Audi to Subaru and Toyota. Call with what you are looking at and we will tell you what to expect.
