Fluid and filter service on the correct interval, with the exact fluid your transmission specifies. The cheapest transmission work is the kind you do on time.

Transmission maintenance is the single most skipped service on modern cars, mostly because a lot of manufacturers spent the 2000s describing the fluid as filled for life. What that phrase actually meant was filled for the life of the warranty, and a great many transmissions in Duluth have found that out the expensive way.
Automatic transmission fluid does three jobs at once. It lubricates, it carries the pressure that operates the clutch packs doing the shifting, and it cools. As it degrades, shift quality goes off, heat goes up, and wear accelerates. A transmission that has been cooked is not.
There is a rule that matters more on foreign cars than almost anywhere else: the fluid specification is not a suggestion. A ZF 8-speed, a VW DSG and a Nissan CVT all want completely different fluid, and universal fluid from a jug is a genuinely bad idea in all three. We use what the manufacturer specifies, every time.
All-wheel drive vehicles may also need a transfer case flush, either when the message light comes on or at the mileage interval the manufacturer sets. It is the same principle as the transmission: the fluid is doing a job, and it stops doing it well before it stops looking like fluid.
A clunk into gear, a hesitation that was not there last winter, a shift that arrives late. Fluid condition is the first thing to look at, and often the only thing.
Frequently a torque converter lock-up clutch shuddering on degraded fluid. Caught early this is often a fluid service. Left alone it is not.
You put it in drive on a cold Duluth morning and there is a pause before anything happens. Cold thickens tired fluid and shows up wear that warm fluid hides.
Transmission fluid is usually red when new and browns as it ages. A leak means a level dropping, and a low transmission runs hot.
Some cars simply lock into third gear and refuse to leave. Stop driving it any further than you have to and call us.
No symptom needed. If it has never been done and nobody can produce a record of it, that on its own is a good reason to have the fluid looked at.
Fluid service pricing depends almost entirely on which transmission is in your car and how much fluid it takes. Some take four quarts and a drain plug. Some take ten quarts of a specific fluid, a new filter that is integrated into the pan, and a scan tool to set the fill level at a target temperature.
Call to book an appointment. We will check what your car actually needs at its mileage and give you an exact price before any work starts, not a range.
Transmission maintenance in Duluth, MN gets skipped more than any other service, and the hills are part of why it should not be. A car that runs up and down the hill between Piedmont or Woodland and downtown every day works its transmission harder than the mileage suggests.
Customers bring cars in from across the Twin Ports for this, including Superior, Hermantown and Proctor, plus Cloquet and Two Harbors. Highway miles on I-35 and Highway 61 are easier on a transmission than city hills, but the fluid still ages. Either way, the service costs a fraction of what a failure does.

Same car, three very different afternoons. Here is the honest version, including the row where we are not the right answer.

We left the row we lose on right in the chart. If your car is still under factory warranty for the repair you need, we will tell you to go to the dealership. We would rather say it here than after you have driven over.
No. We handle transmission maintenance, fluid and filter service, leak repair and diagnosis. Internal rebuilds are not work we take on. If yours needs one we will tell you plainly and point you in the right direction rather than starting something we cannot finish properly.
It is true for the life of the warranty. It is not true for the life of a car you intend to keep to 200,000 miles. Most independent shops and a fair number of transmission specialists will tell you the same thing, and the transmissions we see fail early are overwhelmingly the ones with no service history.
It depends on the car and how it is driven. Short trips, cold starts and hills all count as harder use, and Duluth supplies all three. Call with your year, make and model and we will give you a specific interval rather than a generic number.
Not always, and on some transmissions we will not do one. It depends on the design and the condition of the fluid. We will tell you which approach is right for your car and why.
Yes. Volkswagen and Audi dual-clutch service and CVT fluid service on Nissan and Subaru are both regular work here, using the specified fluid and the correct procedure.
We can diagnose it and tell you honestly what is going on. If it is fluid, condition or a sensor, that is work we do. If it has internal damage, we will tell you that instead of selling you a service that will not save it.
