Subaru Repair in Duluth, MN From a Shop That Knows the Engine
Head gaskets, CVT service, oil consumption, and the tire rule that quietly destroys all-wheel-drive systems. On East Ninth Street since 1991.

Why Duluth Is Full of Subarus, and What That Means for Repairs
There are a lot of Subarus up here, and the reason is obvious the first time you try to get up a Duluth hill in February. Symmetrical all-wheel drive works. What is less obvious is that the same system which makes the car so good in snow is also the part most often ruined by an honest mistake.
Here is the mistake. You pick up a nail, the tire shop replaces one tire, and the new tire has more tread depth than the other three. On a Subaru, a difference of about a quarter of an inch in rolling circumference is enough to make the center differential or the transfer clutch work constantly to make up the difference. It does not fail that day. It fails months later, and the repair costs many times what four matched tires would have.
This is why we will not sell you one tire for a Subaru without telling you what it does. Sometimes the answer is to shave the new tire down to match, sometimes it is to replace all four, and sometimes the wear difference is small enough that it genuinely does not matter. We measure the tread depth on all four tires first and decide from the numbers, rather than guessing. Mounting is done on a Hunter Revolution, which handles the rims most shops will not touch.
The engines have their own history. The EJ25 head gasket problem is real and well documented, and if you own an older Outback or Forester you have probably heard about it. The newer FB engines traded that for an appetite for oil in certain model years. Both are known quantities. Neither is a reason to avoid the car. They are a reason to have somebody look at it who has seen a hundred of them rather than one.
- Head gasket diagnosis and replacement on EJ engines
- Oil consumption testing on FB engines
- CVT fluid service at the correct interval and with the correct fluid
- Timing belt, water pump and idler service on belt-driven engines
- All-wheel-drive diagnosis, center differential and transfer clutch
- Matched tire sets, tread depth measured on all four tires
- Wheel bearings, CV axles and boots
- Brake, suspension and steering work on all models
Head gaskets on EJ25 engines
Usually an external coolant seep before anything dramatic. Caught early it is a planned repair. Ignored, it becomes overheating and a much larger job. Worth checking on any older Outback, Forester or Legacy that is new to you.
Oil consumption on FB engines
Some model years use oil between changes. The real risk is running low without knowing, because the warning light comes on late. We can run a consumption test and tell you whether yours is normal, borderline, or genuinely a problem.
CVT fluid that nobody changed
The transmission is sensitive to fluid condition and to using the correct fluid. There is no shortcut product here. Service it on time with what Subaru specifies and it lasts. Skip it and the repair is not a small one.
Mismatched tires wrecking the drivetrain
The most expensive avoidable Subaru repair there is, and it starts with replacing one tire. See above. If somebody has already put one new tire on your car, bring it in and let us measure before it does any harm.
Rust on everything underneath
6 months of road salt a year gets at brake lines, fuel lines, subframes and exhaust. On a Duluth Subaru the underside deserves looking at every single visit, not just when something is making noise.
Wheel bearings
A hum that changes when you steer. Common enough on higher-mileage cars, and easy to confuse with tire noise, which is why we drive the car rather than diagnosing from the parking lot.
What Subaru Repair Costs in Duluth
Subaru repair in Duluth covers a wide range, from a CVT fluid service to a head gasket on an older EJ engine. What drives the number is less about the badge and more about four things.
We do not quote a repair over the phone from a description of a noise. Somebody looks the car over, finds what is actually wrong, and gives you an exact price before any work starts. If the car is apart and we find something else, you hear about it before we touch it.
- Which engine you haveAn EJ head gasket job and an FB oil consumption test are not remotely the same amount of work. The engine family matters more than the model year.
- How long it has been going onA coolant seep caught early is a repair. The same seep after an overheat can mean a cylinder head. This is the single biggest variable.
- RustSalt-belt cars take longer to work on because fasteners fight back and lines break when disturbed. We tell you up front if yours is one of those.
- Parts choiceSome jobs we recommend genuine Subaru parts and will say why. Others have a quality aftermarket option that saves money without costing you reliability.
Subaru Owners in Duluth and the Northland
Subarus up here live a hard life. Road salt from November into April, hills that work the drivetrain and the brakes, and winters where the car sits outside and starts cold every morning. All of that shows up in what wears out and when.
We see Subarus from Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet, Two Harbors and across the bridge in Superior. A lot of them are second cars for the snow, which means low annual mileage and age-based wear rather than mileage-based wear. Brake fluid, coolant, belts and rubber do not care how far you drove them.
Foreign Affairs has been at 722 E Ninth St since 1991. The shop is set up for foreign makes, not for everything that rolls in, and that includes the diagnostic equipment and the people. If you want somebody who has seen your exact problem before, that is the whole point of a specialist.

Common Questions
Not always, and anybody who says always is selling tires. What matters is the difference in rolling circumference between the new tire and the other three. If the existing tires still have close to full tread, one tire is fine. If they are half worn, the new one can be shaved to match. If they are well worn, four is the honest answer. We measure and tell you which situation you are in.
It affects certain EJ engines, not every Subaru, and not every one of those fails. If you have an older Outback, Forester or Legacy, it is worth having the cooling system looked at so you know where you stand. Catching a seep early is a completely different repair from dealing with an overheat.
Follow Subaru intervals for your model and driving conditions, and use the fluid Subaru specifies. Short trips and cold starts, which is most of what a Duluth car does in winter, are harder on it than highway miles. Tell us how you actually drive and we will tell you where you sit.
Yes. An independent shop servicing your car does not void a factory warranty, as long as the work is done correctly and to specification. Keep your receipts. Warranty repair itself still has to go through a dealer.
No. We book by phone at (218) 722-2246, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It means the right amount of bay time gets set aside for your car instead of a slot that turns out to be too short.
